Dear members, friends and sponsors, On the day of our return from our project trip in February '22, we saw the news of Russia's invasion of the Ukraine on the screens at Amsterdam Airport. The war that actually broke out in Europe was not only to dominate the news throughout the year, but also had a significant impact on our work in Africa and in Germany. Significant price increases for basic food in Africa came true, as did the redirection of donations towards aid for the Ukraine. As a consequence, energy prices rose and we feared that there would be less “flexible” money left over for donations in Africa. But that's not all: to make matters worse, the exchange rate between the euro and the dollar developed in such a way that we had to spend 25 percent more euros to be able to transfer the same dollar amount. At the same time, we received requests for emergency assistance from Africa because our local partners did not receive enough in kind donations for food in our orphanages and the food budget had already been used up in March. It is therefore fair to say that the Ukraine crisis has given us problems on several fronts. The award of the Federal Cross of Merit of Germany to Friederike in May just came at the right time. It gave us the opportunity, after the first big flood of news about Ukraine, to raise awareness of our work in Africa – which meanwhile continued unabated. The overwhelmingly positive response to this great honor has motivated us to make sure again, especially in this difficult year that no child, trainee or student had to leave the program due to lack of funds. To be on the safe side financially, we postponed planned investments in consultation with our sponsors until we could see more clearly whether or not we would achieve our goals. With increased efforts for fundraising campaigns and thanks to the loyalty and creativity of our donors we made it again this year: all children could continue school, training or studies and we were able to provide the necessary food emergency aid. The delayed investments for the further expansion of the youth safehouses, the youth workshops and the farms will be tackled in 2023. But it is certainly too early to give the all-clear. We do not know how inflation and general economic conditions will affect donations in the coming year. And we know: on January 1, 2023, the donation clock was back to zero so we cannot give up! Please stay tuned as we will face the new challenges with African optimism and hope that many people remain convinced that we will forward every single dollar to the projects without deductions. And that we continue to remain engaged personally in Tanzania for several weeks every year. Our greatest goal for the coming years is to expand the infrastructure created so that orphanages, schools, workshops and farms can sustain themselves. This will still require new ideas and efforts but we will tackle the sustainability issue with lots of energy - hoping that the world-wide situation will improve gradually - above all, of course, for the people in Ukraine but also for all other people around the world who suffer from the consequences of this war. New developments 2022/23 Outreach & Emergency Assistance “Outreach” means something like: out of the office and into reality. Our project partners take us with them, either virtually by describing the cases to us in zoom meetings, or by visiting families at home when we are on site for a project trip. The decision which child can still be accepted into the program is then made together, after weighing the availability of funds and places. There are enough cases of hardship in our work area and throughout the country: be it children with disabilities or HIV; children from a background of violence, abuse or neglect. It is sometimes inhumanly difficult to make decide as this certainly determines the life fate of a child. Does it get a chance - or not? The older children at the Canaan Center happily look after the newcomers while learning to take on responsibility - just like in a family with younger siblings. Our partners have to endure these issues even more than we do – it is never easy to say no. And when you have to it sometimes stay on your mind for a long time because you always think maybe there is a different solution after all. But when it comes to funding there is always one priority: not having to take an existing child out of school or training. That would seem even more cruel to us. But with every "yes" we are aware of the rather significant long-term costs involved in nurturing a toddler to later independence. Because that is our goal: support our children until they can stand on their own feet. Sometimes there are also cases in which children or mothers are acutely threatened by violence. Then nothing helps - we cannot look away and have to help when we find out. We then say to ourselves: ok, then we just have to come up with more ideas to get funding! It is also an encouragement when you know that a child or a woman will no longer suffer. As a first step , we identify cases of particular hardship and look for solutions for children in need. Our project partners here are our "Living Water Children Center", our Canaan Center for HIV- positive children, and our TRMEGA program for children in need from the slums. We also cooperate with the church rehabilitation center for disabled children in Monduli. We used this year's donations to support these “outreach activities”: primarily for transport, first-aid material and immediate treatment for disabled children, first accommodation for children in emergency situations. • Future: donations are still needed for these outreach activities. 4
Treatment & Therapy A child who is missing one or more limbs due to an accident or a deformity has little chance of going to school or to a training. That is why it is so important to get kids out of isolation and to educate parents that a disabled child is not an evil curse it is a treatable condition. Many parents, especially in the nomadic Maasai society, cannot afford a prosthesis and do not even know what treatments exist. This is an important starting point for information and help. Children with handicaps caps due have little chance of going to school without therapeutic help. A prosthesis can be a life changer! However, it is not always the physical limitations that block the children's opportunities. Because we must never forget: almost all of our protégés are somehow traumatized and therefore sometimes "tick" a little differently than children who have grown up in a protected environment. It's actually enough if you lose one or both parents as a child. But if you have to push hunger, don't know where to sleep or even if your "well-meaning" uncle calls you to work or to a completely different service, then it almost does not fit into a small child's backpack anymore. It is all the more important that we have competent and psychologically trained social workers in our orphanages and schools who can take care of supposedly inexplicable behavioral problems of our children. Some are more resilient, while others will struggle throughout their lives. Our job is to let them know that they are loved for who they are and that they are safe. And then it goes step by step to overcome existing problems. In the second step, we have sick or disabled children treated in to make them school- ready. Traumatized children receive psychological support. • Our project partner here is the rehabilitation center for disabled children in Monduli, the center was not built by us but has been supported by us for years. • This year we used donations to purchase a larger amount of prosthetic material, for example to enable poor children to have a new prosthetic leg. If necessary, children are also treated therapeutically to work on their trauma. This is partly done by our social workers, but in individual cases also by psychologists. • Future: the procurement of prosthesis material is not yet complete and we need further donations to purchase sufficient prosthesis equipment. 5
Care For children who still have family left - be it a parent, grandmother, aunt or adult sibling - being cared for in this environment is often the best option rather than being placed in an orphanage. Provided, of course, that the family care is safe from neglect or abuse. Our team of local social workers takes care of the children and their mothers. Every child and every family has very individual problems that need to be solved somehow. Bryson and Angela (left) were transitioning to high school this year. The burden on mothers affected by HIV is often so great that they almost collapse under it. The classical situation: the father dead, the mother and possibly the children are infected. By helping the mothers with school fees and by supporting them and the children we give them the opportunity to get back on their feet. More on this under Step 7. This time, too, we visited “our” children in their boarding schools. The boarding school system is common in Tanzania and the system plays into our hands when the living situation at home is catastrophic. It is good to get the kids out of poor living conditions but they should be able to return for the holidays when – with our help – the housing/living situation improves. We continue to point out to our children how important it is for them and their rest families to maintain a relationship. This program is particularly important to us, and we know some of our students for many years and can see the great successes of our former students. This motivates us to keep trying, if possible not to leave anyone behind, even if he or she is not a high achiever. In the third step, we help orphans and young people to live with their remaining families if there is no immediate danger. We finance school education, livelihood and medical care. • Our project partner here is the TRMEGA program for vulnerable children from the slums of the area of Arusha. • We used donations again this year for school fees, school uniforms, books, bus fees and boarding school fees. We provided the impoverished mothers with the essentials for a dignified housing and living and enabled them to earn their own income. • Future: In the coming years, too, this large and important part of our program will continue. This task requires donations every year to enable the children to go to school. Our motto: "Never have to take a child out of school!" 6
Orphanages and Orphanage Farms If there is no other way, accommodation in an orphanage is a good alternative. In these cases there are no parents or "stable" relatives, or it is simply too risky to leave the children with the families because of violence, alcoholism, drugs, abuse etc. The problem is always: at some point the orphanages are full and there is much more need than we and our partners can finance and cater for. Therefore, we are striving to expand the capacities of our orphanages for further emergencies. Since our Canaan orphanage for HIV-positive children only has a small garden farm, we had to provide emergency food aid twice this year in view of the increased food prices. We are very happy and proud that with the "Canaan Center" we have built one of the few houses in Tanzania that also takes in HIV-positive children. In the meantime, it has become a kind of model facility for the entire region. We show that positive and negative children can live together in a house, sleep in a dormitory, eat and play together - and nothing happens. That is the message to overcome the HIV stigma but unfortunately it has not sunk in to the society as a whole. HIV still carries a heavy stigma. Ironically, the Catholic Church is doing really great things in this respect by providing immediate and uncomplicated care for HIV infected people. In our countries there were billions from the Federal Center for Health Education for educational campaigns to take the HIV crisis, in Tanzania (and many other African countries) there was nothing at all. Or even less than nothing, i.e. rather the deprivation of dignity and the destruction of family cohesion if the infection becomes known. For years now we do not even give it a second thought, the HIV status is so irrelevant for who you hug, greet, r with which child you cuddle or play football with. In the 4th step, we place children in acute need and danger in one of our orphanages in order to accommodate them safely. Both orphanages have a farm to produce and sell food for self-sufficiency. • Our project partner here are the Living Water Children Center (LWCC) and the Canaan Center of the Catholic Archdiocese of Arusha. • We used donations this year for smaller expansion measures (soccer field in the Canaan Center) and for emergency food aid (Canaan Center). We also finance the school fees for 51 students from the Canaan orphanage. Funds from last year were also used to further develop the Living Water Farms. • Future: More donations are needed to further expand the farms. We are preparing a new project to make the Canaan Center independent of donations in the future (see page 30) and to expand the center for possible new admissions 7
Our second orphanage - the "Living Water Children Center" was also affected by the increased food prices, but here we could build on previous investments in farm land over the past few years (we bought all together 3 pieces of farm land). These measures are now taking effect and are an important contribution to the long-term supply of the center with food and the generation of income to care for the orphans and to run the center. The operation of the Living Water Children Center is cross-financed through the income of the paying students from the schools, which also operate under the umbrella of the Living Water Children Center. The orphanage farms make another crucial contribution to the sustainability of the Living Water Orphanage. The products are used in the orphanage and in the schools or sold for a profit to generate income. The older students like to work on the farms during their holidays and, thus, learn something practical at the same time! Keyword long-term: Our major goal for the orphanages is that one day they can operate independently of donations. That is why we want to make significant investments in the coming years for the further development of the farms and of self-sufficiency. It is important to keep looking for ideas and ways of generating additional income. This is precisely the dividing point between emergency aid and sustainable aid: although it is sometimes unavoidable to provide emergency aid in the short term, it makes more sense in the long term to set up structures that make donation support more and more superfluous. 8th
Primary and Secondary Schools The Yakini Primary School is now not only one of the largest schools in the region, but also one of the best. The primary school always does very well in the annual school rankings in Tanzania. It has repeatedly been number 1 in Arusha and is among the top 20 in all of Tanzania (among 22,000 schools). Not only has an excellent school been created for orphans but also for all other children in the region who have the opportunity to go to "Yakini" as paying students. In this way, the operation of the school and the Living Water orphanage is cross- financed and we have created a sustainable infrastructure. We are always happy when we are there and experience the lively life in our schools. Logistically a masterpiece, almost 1000 ‘ fleas’ under one roof, i.e. attending school. The logistics are currently being challenged by an escalating water problem because only dust comes out of the pipe when you flush the toilet. This is due to people illegally tapping the water long pipes and stealing water. The military, which covers much of the region's water supply, then turned off everyone's taps. Now 30,000 liters per week have to be brought in by water trucks. Another significant drain on the budget, on top of increased food and diesel prices (school buses!). A factor of 1000 per day makes a difference, even if a meal only costs a few cents more. It's a daily battle against adversity that nobody here is to blame for. Some parents of paying students cannot pay the school fees because everything has become more expensive. Means: less income with increased expenses. You don't have to be a businessman to understand that it's going to be difficult. The Yakini Primary School, which we have substantially helped build up over the years, is one of the best educational institutions in the country. But now she is struggling with increased food prices and acute water shortages. There is still a lot to do here. In the 5th step, we ensure that our orphans and young people get a good education through our elementary school and high school. • Our project partner here is “Living Water”, founded and managed by the Kimaro family “Living Water Children Center (LWCC)” as a non-profit umbrella organization for orphanages, schools, farms and safehouses with youth workshops • Use of donations: The schools are now by-and-large self-sustainable through the income of the paying students as well as from the income and products of the farms. • Future: Donations will continue to be needed for larger investments, such as the improvement of the water supply. 9
The construction and expansion of the Yakini Secondary School (Gymnasium), almost completely financed by us and our sponsors, is more or less complete. Smaller investments will still be necessary here and there – such as water and electricity supply – as these cannot be met from current income. Otherwise, the principle of sustainability has also been perfectly implemented here, because there are also paying students who help finance the operation of the school and the Living Water orphanage, thus helping to provide the orphans with a high-quality school. This year we were once again able to donate numerous books to the library, which we either took with us as donations in kind or obtained in Tanzania. Reading is the gateway to the world, especially for the orphans, and their horizon expands immensely. This year, the second class passed the secondary school leaving certificate and thus acquired the license to attend high school. The structure of the high school classes, however, has proven to be more difficult than first assumed, since a minimum of 25 students per class is required by law. In addition, being able to offer various specializations (e.g. arts and science) requires a lot of personnel and money. Until this structure is completed, the students are now attending the last two classes of a neighboring high school to finish their school education. Our Yakini Secondary School is also one of the best schools in the region. Our new delivery of entertaining books are particularly popular with our protégés (here with headmaster Walter Kimaro and Friederike Heidenhof). But here, too, the water problem is giving everyone a major headache. 10
Training, Studies & Promotion of Excellence While we have built or financed the construction of orphanages and schools together with our project partners, we rely on the existing infrastructure of institutions in Tanzania for practical training and furtherbstudies. It is our job to work with our partners to identify good quality institutions, especially with regard to later career prospects with the relevant qualification. We replenish the education fund every year from the donations we receive. In this way, we enable our students to go to college or university after they have completed school, provided that they meet the necessary preconditions. Otherwise, what a pity it would be if we "let go" of all that talent? Barnabas Kauki, Epiphania Qamara, Stella Ally and Witnes Joram have completed their bachelor's degree! Now the master’s degree, internships and job application are waiting for them…. Andoleila Charles, Happiness Terevael, John Kivuyo and Samwel Pallangyo are motivated to lay the foundations for later employment or self-employment through practical vocational training. In step 6 , we award scholarships from our "education fund" for particularly talented students (orphans) in order to further develop qualified young people. The more practically oriented talents are given the opportunity to complete vocational training. • Our project partners are the TRMEGA program for vulnerable children and our two orphanages and schools (Canaan, Living Water and Yakini Schools). • We used this year's donations to pay for education and college and university fees. This also includes subsistence, books, housing and transport • Future: We continue to need donations every year to fund training and to fund tuition. 11
A handful of our young people are so good that they qualify for a "promotion of excellence". This can be a further specialization, but it can also be a non-university career. For example, Hilda Missoji is in nursing school, but she dreams of becoming a doctor. We are sure that we can make her dream come true if she stays focuses - like Elizabeth Mushi, who is already on her way to a medical doctor. Just like Juvenal Sostein, who is already a qualified doctor and is now aiming for a master's degree in "Public Health Science". Sahrah Hamza is an accountant and she is not able to continue her training to become a state-certified specialist, which also means much better good job prospects. David Kikende is a gifted soccer player and we try to encourage him to attend sports academies whenever he can while he continues to works towards his college degree. These are just a few examples, the list of successful orphans has now grown to over 100, the vast majority of them were able to find employment or self-employment. Help for self-help – Job Training Center School and training or studies are one thing – earning your own living is another. Not every child can become a doctor, teacher or accountant, especially the weaker learners and the mostly unskilled or illiterate mothers need our help to help themselves. When we visit the families we support we are sometimes amazed at what has become of the mothers and how much we have been able to improve their living environment over time. Years ago Nuru Daniel was ailing "thanks" to HIV, her relatives wanted to take her house away from her after her husband died and she didn't know how to support her three girls. Today she is a strong woman, the three girls are good students or ready to start their careers. We had to rebuild the house because it was about to collapse from being eaten by termites. In our seminars and self-help groups, Nuru learned with the other women how to get back on track. We also teach children who have no mothers or "caretaker" the skills they lack from their parents' home in groups or seminars: How do I behave towards others? How do I assert myself? Where do I want to go and what do I have to do for it? And the remaining mothers also learn important skills in our seminars. We were able to see the fruits of the work during our visit: A number of the mothers were released into independence through seminars and targeted start-up support. The same applies to our young graduates, if they find it easier to get a foothold in small self-employment than in a job. We regularly visit some of our small start-ups and then we think: yes, that's exactly how it has to work - if there is no employment, then an alternative has to be found. And thanks to previous internships and a network of our mentors, they also get the right support so that the supposedly smart business idea doesn't turn into a pipe burst. 12
There is still room for improvement when it comes to business planning and implementation - too often what the neighbor is already doing is just copied. This is where we intervene and check, evaluate and advise on the creation of credible business plans. Margreth Andrewas, Paulina Mushi and Theresia Ezekiel learned the basics of business in our seminars and received a small amount of seed capital. Now, a few years after overcoming their acute emergency, they can stand on their own two feet. In our TRMEGA job training center, our pupils, students and mothers learn, among other things, life skills, business skills, family planning. They are prepared for later independence in internships and with the help of mentors. In steps 7 to 9 we provide help for self-help: First we stabilize the remaining relatives - mostly HIV-sick mothers in poverty and without a job - in order to maintain a family structure for the children. We accompany orphans and young people and teach them so-called "life skills" that they didn't get from their parents. We also offer seminars to pave the way for young adults (orphans) to find a job or become self-employed. • Our project partners are the TRMEGA program for vulnerable children and our two orphanages and schools (Canaan, Living Water and Yakini Schools). • We used donations to support small self-employment for our graduates and mothers. We also financed seminars for schoolchildren, young people and mothers to prepare them optimally for the time ahead without our support and to address other important topics (e.g. family planning). We have also enabled young people to do internships with companies and supported them with mentors in difficult situations. • Future: We will continue to need donations in the years to come to help graduates and mothers to find independence. Only then do we consider our “mission” to be complete. 13
Safehouses & Youth Workshops With school, training, college or university the foundation is laid, but sometimes the "last mile" to the job is the most difficult. Our goal is to only release young people from the programs when they can really stand on their own two feet. But until independence is really achieved, the young people are still at risk of drifting into an unfavorable direction. That's why we don't leave them alone, even if they have a degree in their pocket. One last year’s focus was therefore the construction of our two new safe houses for young orphans and the adjoining youth workshops. These are hostels where the young people can spend the time between school/college/ university/training and work or self-employment. Or they are in good hands during the sometimes long holidays and waiting times, without hanging around idly and possibly coming up with stupid ideas out of boredom or making false friends. "To keep them busy" is our motto, according to which we do not only offer meaningful temporary employment but also insist on active participation in this program. The small sewing shop and bakery in the youth workshops are running at full speed. The milk kitchen, where our farm products are processed into yoghurt and butter and where the young people learn something at the same time, has also started operating. With the help of the two sales shops, the young people learn the basics of commercial activity and sell the products they made. The living area of the Safehouse was ceremoniously opened by us in early 2023! 14
In our seminars during the holidays, all other children from the Living Water Children Center and the Yakini Schools also benefit from the range of practical skills offered by the Safehouses: after the theory, the products from the farm are processed and then eaten. In the 10th step, we accompany our graduates on the "last mile" to independence. In addition, we motivate our alumni who have already taken the step into (self-)nemployment to make a contribution for children in need as soon as they earn money themselves. • Our project partner is the Living Water Children Center, founded and run by the Kimaro family. This includes the Living Water Orphanage, the Yakini schools, the farm and the Safe House with the youth workshops. • We used donations to set up the youth workshops and to complete the second safehouse, including the part of the farm located there (youth farm). • Future: The further expansion of the youth workshops and the youth farm are also in the pipeline of the program next year. Here, too, we are pursuing the goal of being able to operate these facilities independently of donations in the future by generating our own income. 15
The second safe house can now also be occupied, it is located on a section of our orphanage farm, where the young safe house residents also work on a rotational basis. Our conclusion: it is not always easy to find the right balance between acute emergency aid and long-term support, including self-sufficiency. But if young people are left to their own devices after school, it is quite likely that acute emergency aid would have to be provided again to the same students in a very short time. So it is not an either/or: failure to provide long-term funding almost inevitably leads to acute emergency aid. Many are not aware that new funds are needed every year for long-term funding: school fees, training fees, university and college fees: all of this has to be raised every year. That's why we are never tired of promoting support for our projects, as we do every year. And we are very, very happy and grateful that we have been able to fund our programs with the assistance of our donors and sponsors! Once independence has been achieved, these young people are of course perfect role models for our younger pupils and students to come. Then we meet them again in our seminars, where they tell the younger ones about their experiences. It's always great to see them again because we've known most of them from the beginning. And between then and now there are almost 18 years - a whole young life... 16
Public Relation One event this year had a positive impact on our public reputation: the awarding of the Federal Cross of Merit by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Friederike Heidenhof, initiator and Executive Director of "Partnership for Africa". We see this award as the result of joint efforts by all of our founding members, sponsors, volunteers and supporting organizations. The award ceremony in Krefeld's town hall was covered by the press and television and generated a positive echo beyond the borders of Krefeld. This award also resulted in additional contacts and during our visits and discussions we were given the opportunity to present our work and projects in detail in many places. Our loyal supporters and fellow travelers used every opportunity to find further sponsors and tell them about our work, but were also creative in initiating campaigns. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters and our volunteers who helped us with information booths, raffles and flea markets, with campaigns in social networks and on Better place or with the graphic design. Note: All public relations measures such as mailings, flyers, calendars, photo books, websites, etc. are NOT financed from donations, but are privately sponsored. • Voluntary work: Julia Hens joined us this year on her own initiative as a volunteer. Her first assignment – together with her future husband and friends was a flea market in heavy rain – this is already legendary. It will be continued in the coming year, and Julia will also get involved in the care of sponsored children and donor relations; she will take care of potential project volunteers. In addition, Inge Vogel, Gabi Lange, Jutta and Vicky Chirita, Liane and Stefan Klahn and Ilga Bähre contributed time and ideas to fundraising (Betterplace, reading bones, information booths at horse shows in Wiesbaden, Frankfurt and Munich, charity osteopathy seminar). • The social networks and the crowdfunding platform Betterplace helped us spread the word of our work: With Facebook, Instagram, Betterplace and WhatsApp we reach our donors for the latest news. Our videos on YouTube are also highly popular. • Press and television are always important multipliers. We managed to place articles in the Reiterrevue, St. Georg, Reiter spectrum and in the Rheinische Post, the Westdeutsche Zeitung, the Niederrhein Edition and the NRZ. A television report in the WDR local time in Düsseldorf also had a particularly high outreach. • Arusha Reports: The reports sent by e-mail from Africa offer the possibility of addressing donors individually and inform them about the use of the donations. Many photos illustrate the project work in an entertaining way. 17
• Calendar: this year we have the most beautiful motifs from our children in one created and privately financed photo calendar. • Mailings: Thank you letters and personal Christmas letters are particularly important to us. In this way, Partnership for Africa differs fundamentally from "bulk mail" that accumulates anonymously in mailboxes, especially at Christmas time. The feedback and donations received confirm that this is one of the most valued actions. • Riders for Africa - Horse Ambassador: After the Daily Mirror said goodbye to sporting and retired the position of Horse Ambassador for "Riders for Africa" didn't remain vacant for long! Famoso will now follow in his footsteps and we are delighted that he can take over from his stable mate "Ken"! Thanks to his owner Flora Keller and his rider Benjamin Werndl! The campaign logo for the "Riders for Africa" initiative continues to be a great success, as many donors from the equestrian scene can identify very well with our work and we were able to convince additional supporters about our work. • Activities in detail: Auctions: On the occasion of the “Thuringia” auction of Agrar Crawinkel GmbH, a pony was auctioned off again this year for our projects. Sponsor letters: our godparents and children are selectively in exchange if this is mutually desired. We organize this exchange. Information booths/raffles: An information booth at the PM seminar as part of a Uta-Gräf Seminar was well attended, and three raffles were successfully carried out as part of the free training sessions with Uta Gräf and Stefan Schneider including a session with Michael Geitner. This was made possible by the generous raffle donations from companies such as Loesdau, Haas, Roeckl, Equiextreme, Equitoria, LK Reitsport and FN-Verlag. Presentations/fundraising: This year we were invited to an online dialogue with clients and employees of WSH Deutsche Vermögenstreuhand to present our work - with good success for fundraising. Numerous other companies and private individuals are involved in fundraising campaigns for the projects in Tanzania - be it fundraising on the occasion of Christmas, birthdays, Rotary/Lions events, Christmas bazaars or anniversaries. We were particularly pleased with the creative Christmas campaigns by various companies (Baulig Orthodontics, HC Arnoldi, Wehorse, Vetmedicum), who donated to us the equivalent value of the gifts they otherwise gave to customers or who carried out charity campaigns! 18
Ambassador horse Daily Mirror, with its owner Flora Keller and its rider Benjamin Werndl, has substantially sponsored various projects in recent years (e.g. Canaan orphanage, safehouses, orphanage farm). Uta Gräf (right) makes an enormous contribution to motivating further donors as an ambassador for “Riders for Africa” due to her tireless commitment and her high profile as an internationally successful dressage rider. Whether flea market, trade fair information booth, cookie or potato pancake campaign or raffles: energy and creative ideas of our sponsors and volunteers generated funds and contributed to increasing awareness. Press articles in the daily press, in equestrian journals and on television about the award of the Federal Cross of Merit have helped promote our work and our organisation. 19
Sponsors and Co-operations The cooperation with our sponsors and funding organizations has been an important pillar of the success of Partnership for Africa for many years - many projects would not be possible without this support. This year, the following cooperations were in the foreground: • This Klaus and Lore Rating Foundation supported the establishment and expansion of the youth workshops in our safehouse for young orphans. • The Eulenhof Foundation helped with the construction and expansion of the youth farm and, in view of the uncertain economic situation, higher prices and falling exchange rates, was willing to postpone some of the planned investments to ensure that all school fees could be3 paid. • The Handauf Foundation supported the interior design of our safehouse for young orphans. • The Spatzenhof Foundation campaigned for the expansion of the water supply of the LWCC orphanage. • The Lions Clubs in Untertaunus, Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern are among our loyal supporters, and the Rotary Club of Wuppertal also regularly supports our projects. • The company IWEST has been one of the key sponsors of our activities for children in need. • We have also registered Partnership for Africa on the following donation platforms and companies and regularly receive donations from them: Amazon Smile, Google, Betterplace. • In addition, we work closely with other organizations , such as time2help from Herrenberg, who support local projects together with us through their own association. Thanks to regular coordination meetings in Germany and Tanzania we can tackle larger projects together for our joint benefit. 20
Finances 2022 Donation accounts In the year under review, donations were received in the form of monetary donations and donations in kind. Since April 1, 2011, the association's account has been held at the Postbank and all transactions are processed through it. Donations in kind are listed separately, as the donors chose not to issue a donation receipt. The donations received are assigned to the intended donation purposes and used accordingly. The monetary donations received were forwarded to the designated partner organizations as soon as they were received or instructed to do so in accordance with the agreed payment plan. In the case of donations that are not earmarked for a specific purpose, an agreement was reached with the respective partner organization as to what purpose the funds should serve. The receipt of the donation was confirmed in each case by the head of the organization. Result of the Audit Report On a voluntary basis, the board and management commissioned the Krefeld law firm RSM to carry out a forensic audit in 2021. The annual financial statements for the previous year as well as the system and management of the supporting files were examined. The audit testified "no objection". The previous tests in 2014 and 2018 were just as successful. The next audit is scheduled for 2024. Expenses for management and additional costs The reported expenses for managing the association are made up of hourly flat rates, travel expenses and other ancillary costs. These expenses are covered privately by the Management and an additional sponsor so that the costs incurred are not borne by third-party donations or the projects. This procedure ensures that the administrative costs for other donors is de facto zero. If you were to put the expenses and additional costs in relation to the donations received, the percentage would be less than 3 percent and thus a fraction of the usual "administrative expenses" for comparable institutions. Voluntary work also makes an important contribution to minimizing expenses . Thanks to the commitment of friends of our work, we were able to save considerable costs, which are available to provide assistance. In addition, technical equipment (computer equipment, copier, camera, etc.) is purchased from private funds and made available to the Association free of charge. The transport costs for donations in kind and all travel expenses are also borne privately. 23

Partnership for Africa - The Association We love what we do. And it is incredible to see what has been created since the beginning of our engagement with the help of many supporters: orphanages, schools and programs for children in need! The acquisition of donations to support development projects in Africa began in 2005 with the initiative of Friederike Heidenhof after a three-month consulting assignment in Tanzania. "I was and still am convinced of the good work being done on the ground by our Tanzanian partners." Since 2005, new projects have been launched and existing programs further developed together with the local partners. In 2011, we founded the Association Partnership for Africa. Goals and Background The core problem: The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Tanzania has affected almost an entire generation of parents and left behind many orphans for whom the state cannot provide. The threat of neglect of such children and young people is also a serious factor in destabilizing a society. Such children are particularly vulnerable to crime and prostitution, radicalization or flight. Our core objective: We help - through education and by helping people to help themselves - to build the next generation as the pillars of a new, strengthened society. We combat the causes of flight and radicalization - two of today's most pressing problems. Why Tanzania? Tanzania is a relatively stable country in the East African region. It is important for peace in the region that Tanzania (and also Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda) remain stable. This is because the region is affected by various destabilizing influences in neighboring countries: civil war-like areas in Congo, terrorist militias in Somalia, refugees from Burundi and Congo in camps on the borders. Why education? Children and young people are the future of the country. At the same time, they have the hardest time if society is not able to give them a good education and training. In many African countries, children in particular are rarely able to escape the vicious circle of poverty, illness and lack of prospects. What does the government do? Even a relatively well-functioning state system within an elected democracy, as in Tanzania, is not (yet) able to create a social safety net for the needs of the population. Gaps in various areas of the country's development are currently being filled by international organizations (World Bank, EU, African Development Bank, etc.) with large infrastructure projects, administrative reforms or anti-corruption programs. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), especially smaller ones, are often more likely to make a contribution at the grass-roots level. A drop in the ocean? Partnership for Africa is one of the smaller NGOs, but we can work effectively because of the private assumption of costs and short decision-making paths. One thing is clear: Partnership for Africa cannot save the world. But together we can make a contribution to stabilizing the country, and we can provide 28
humanitarian aid and alleviate the greatest need for a good number of people. Others are doing similar things - each with a different focus - and so in the end a significant difference is made for people. What do we do differently? What distinguishes us from other - mostly larger - organizations that also do good work: 1. We (the Board and one other supporter) bear our costs privately: no third party donation is used to fund travel expenses, flights, hotels, flyers, homepage, postage, etc. We stand for the fact that every cent goes directly to the projects - without deductions. 2. We stay "on it" for many years, and accompany our protégés until they can be independent. Often projects end after three or five years or focus "only" on one aspect, e.g. the school education of the children. But what comes after that? To keep this in mind is our special concern... 3. We can work efficiently, without lengthy decision-making processes and hierarchies. Today a good idea or strategy is born, tomorrow it will be implemented. This means we can react quickly and always have our finger on the pulse of developments on the ground. 4. We are relatively often in Tanzania - at least twice a year for several weeks. This is hardly affordable for many larger organizations, since a large number of projects in different countries usually have to be managed by one consultant. We are concentrating on one region and pursuing the "education from A to Z" approach there. Finishing what has started takes presence, time and patience.... Our way of working The work of "Partnership for Africa" is roughly made up of two parts: the work in Tanzania and the work in Germany. Our lingua franca to and in Tanzania is English. How do we operate in both worlds? Field of activity Germany (Europe, USA) • Strategic planning, club management, general meeting • Fundraising (personal contacts, project applications, campaigns) • Fund management, accounting, budget planning, donation receipts, bank transfers • Project planning, contracts, legal issues • Daily exchange and coordination with the project teams in Tanzania (video, email, phone) • Monitoring, evaluation of the projects, auditing of the project partners • Mentoring program: mediation, reports, photo and letter exchange • Public relations (mailings, reports, homepage, flyers, calendars, photo books, social media, etc.) • Press and media work (print media,TV, specialized press) • Reports to donors and funding organizations • Planning and implementation of project trips, guest care, internship support. So most of our work takes place in our office. It roughly corresponds to a full-time position and is provided free of charge by the two board members, Friederike and Günter Heidenhof. In addition, all office, administration and travel costs are borne privately by us and another donor. 29
Due to our frequent and long-term presence on site, we are very close to the teams and the people in Tanzania. We are acquainted with both the locations and the majority of the individual children, young people and adults. The main activities in Tanzania include: Field of activity Tanzania • Meetings with project partners and teams • Project tours and visits to supported families in the slum areas of Arusha • Evaluation of projects, visual inspection of construction projects • Participation in seminars and group events for children and young people • Review of accounting and record keeping, photo documentation • Strategy and budget planning with the teams • Donor and sponsor communication from Tanzania • Guest care, visiting program In Tanzania we usually spend the first 5 days in meetings with our teams and project partners. Based on a detailed agenda, we discuss all pending issues and review the receipts for the funds spent. A large part of the discussions focuses on strategy planning for the coming months (eg. new projects, supplementary programs) and years. We also discuss individual “cases” of children and young people and their mothers. In addition, we visit the project sites several times and take a look at new developments. From these visits, revies and discussions with the teams, the requirements for the future arise. Back home, we start again with fundraising, project applications, etc. Ensuring future viability – this is how you can help! The infrastructure in schools, orphanages and other facilities that has been created by Partnership for Africa is already financed to a large extent from its own income - we made sure of sustainability from the start, because we want everything to be able to continue to operate one day, even independently of our donations. In the case of the schools, this is done by the paying students, who cross-finance the operation of the schools and the attached orphanage. In addition, farms and youth workshops help cover costs. Other institutions, such as the orphanage for HIV-positive children, the center for disabled children and the education program continue to depend on donations. We want to change that in the next 5 to 10 years! That's why we started to set up a foundation, the income from which should one day be sufficient to support precisely these institutions. We therefore call upon everyone who can to consider donating part of their assets or an inheritance to our foundation. Some of our long-standing sponsors and founding members have already done so. Partnership for Africa - The Foundation In order to put our work for children in need on a sustainable footing, we established a Foundation in 2020, the income from which can be used to finance part of our activities in the long term. The Foundation is in the same proven hands and pursues the same goals as the Association. Co-contributors who, like us and our members, are interested and happy to make a capital contribution as an endowment are very welcome. In total, we are initially aiming for a sum of 100,000 euros as start-up capital and, in the long term, a sum of 2 million euros. Parallel to this, we continue to rely on donations to the Association Partnership for Africa; endowments should not replace this commitment, but rather complement it. Background In the past 15 years, we have acquired more than EUR 3 million in donations and used them to create a sustainable infrastructure and the corresponding programs. As this annual report also shows in some places, some programs are dependent on the continued flow of donations to be continued in the same direction. Therefore, it makes sense to create a sustainable source of income with the help of a foundation. We would like that "for all eternity" as many children as possible, who come from emergency situations, can pass through these facilities created by our project activities. Through the continued acquisition of donations - as before - and through sustainable income from a growing endowment. Advantages for practical work Our partners in Africa and we would like to expand what has been created, consolidate it and keep it in good condition in the long term, instead of continuing to grow. The foundation offers a sustainable source of funding as a basic income. Advantages for the contributors Creation of a meaningful purpose for existing capital, participation in the Foundation's Board of Trustees. Full tax deductibility over several years (at least in Germany, a capital contribution can be "carried forward" to subsequent years and thus gradually deducted). Tax advantages in the case of inheritance, e.g. by undercutting the exemption limits by skimming off an amount as a Foundation contribution. How to contribute? Contributors give a self-selected sum to the already existing Foundation and thus increase the interest income of the Partnership for Africa Foundation. Endowments can be made at any time and in any amount. As with every contribution, donors receive a donation receipt for the amount donated. 31

What exactly the local needs are is the guiding principle of our engagement based on discussions with competent Tanzanians. This has been one of our recipes for success. Since 2005, new projects have been launched and existing programs have been further developed together with local partners. In 2011, we established the association "Partnership for Africa", and in 2020, the foundation was added. To date, there are several milestones that provide a good overview of what has been achieved so far.
Our local Project Partners As a matter of principle, Partnership for Africa does not carry out its own projects, but works together with non- profit partner organizations in Tanzania. The reason: The knowledge about the exact needs, the know-how for the implementation and the knowledge of the local specifics is best provided by the local well-trained experts themselves. Our core project with the church as a partner is the Canaan Children's Centre for HIV-positive orphans, which we built in 2013. Since then, Partnership for Africa has further expanded and built up the centre and enabled 50 children to attend school. The Living Water Children Center (a registered NGO) was founded in 2002 as a small orphanage by the Tanzanian Kimaro family. Since 2005, we have been significantly supporting the expansion of the orphanage and the schools. In the meantime, about 1000 children attend the Yakini Primary School, which we helped to build, and most of them stay at the boarding school for the entire school year. Apart from the now more than 100 orphans, the remaining children pay school fees, from which the orphans are sustainably co-financed. In 2017, together with LWCC, we were able to complete the Yakini Secondary School where pupils can graduate with a high school diploma. In 2018, we launched the LWCC farm project, which now provides food for the school children and orphans. In 2019, we were able to complete the new LWCC orphanage, which provides space for 100 new orphans who will later transfer to Yakini schools. Just recently, we have completed two Safe-houses to housing and training for vulnerable youth. TRMEGA was launched in 2010 by former AAIDRO Director Helen Nguya, who is an internationally recognized professional. TRMEGA is our partner for the MVC program for children at risk, whom we support from A to Z (school, training, job, study). With TRMEGA, we conduct job training for youth looking for jobs, and provide start-up capital for small businesses. We also train HIV-positive mothers living in poverty so that one day they can earn their own living. . 33
